Papilio machaon. Art shop.
They are large butterflies, with a powerful and agile flight, and a characteristic wingbeat, often low.
The forewings have a yellow and black livery, mainly on their lateral stripe and basal area; the veins are also outlined in black. The hindwings have the same colours, although the submarginal lateral stripe has enclosures with numerous
iridescent blue scales and a large reddish ocellus, circumscribed on its upper part by blue and black in the anal area. Two characteristic caudal appendages can be seen. The caterpillars stand out on their host plants thanks to their bright colours. They are passive, moving little and slowly. The chrysalises hibernate. They are held in a vertical position by a belt, made of silk thread and located between the thorax and the abdomen, and by the cremaster. They are angular, green (summer chrysalises) or straw-coloured.
(winter chrysalises).
